Ten Things You Should Already Know By Now
1. What’s important today won’t matter tomorrow
Yeah, so you got a problem. Sleep on it, sunshine. Put it off. Most problems can be safely ignored. You’ll be amazed how often they sort themselves out.
And the gravity of any given problem is inversely proportional to the hour of the day. At three in the morning, you’ve got an insurmountable issue. After four whisky and cokes at nine in the evening, you haven’t even got an inkling of a problem.
2. Everybody else is furiously improvising, so you can too
Show me an expert and I’ll show you a charlatan. FAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT, amigo.
21 year old lifestyle design guru? Hell yeah! Fat, unemployed life-coach? Why not? Homeopathy professional? Whatever, bring it on!
Choose your path, and then Act As If You’re Wearing A Cape.
3. Nobody thinks about you as much as you think about you
Really. They don’t. For example, I’m not thinking about you now. But I bet you are.
4. It’s OK to piss people off
But if you’re pissing everybody off, all the time, it’s time to quit being a fucking asshole.
5. Aspiration is for suckers
(arf)
6. Nobody tells all the truth, all the time
So lower your expectations of people. When put in a spot, people fib.
We men lie about our alcohol consumption all the time.
When we’re young and say we had six beers, we probably only had three. Nowadays, if we say we only had three beers, you can be sure it was closer to six.
It doesn’t mean we don’t love you
7. Life doesn’t get better – only your perception of life improves
There was a little man with a lame left leg. He lived on the outskirts of town in a tumble-down house. He had a hole in his roof, and water would come in day and night. His lame left leg meant he couldn’t go out to work, so he survived on the charity of others, who would give him scraps of food. Sometimes he would go for two days and nights with nothing to eat. One day, the town council decided to fix his roof. The little man with the lame left leg became the happiest person you have ever seen. He was so grateful to be dry that he would smile and sing for the passersby all day long.
***
There was a healthy, beautiful woman who lived in a huge house with six servants and manicured lawns. But alas, she was permanently angry, because Jeannine, that bitch, had told her that her handbag was so last season.
8. Your family comes first, but not to the detriment of everything else
You want to go out with the girls? Tell your husband to make his own dinner. And gents, you don’t need permission for that once-a-year trip to Vegas, you just need to communicate it properly.
9. You’re wrong as often as you’re right
So don’t dwell on either.
10. Men should never wear wigs

1978
I had just been dropped off from my last ride of the day. An 18 wheeler had been my ride and truckers covered some miles. I am somewhere in the Blue Ridge mountains or Smokey mountains and it has just gotten dark. The usual routine was to walk off the highway into the woods, or up under an overpass and roll out my bag for a night’s sleep. It was cold, I remember that well. It was late October maybe even November, I had spent the summer in Nova Scotia (again) and then dropped down to Boston to see relatives, then New York City because it's New York City. Now I was hitchin’ back to Southern California.
I had less than $25 - 1978 dollars on me, a valid driver’s license and a very light bag. This was my 3rd year on the road, traveling light and smart had become an art.
The evening routine would consist of securing some privacy, finding some soft dry ground, laying my bag true north (pyramid thing), journaling and making sure my money and ID were safe. Then off I would drift.
The next morning I made my way down to the highway and now California/home felt like a long way away and with no ID, I saw myself somewhere in Arkansas or New Mexico for a very long time with a vagrancy rap.
So down to the highway I go very bummed and my day starts with a state trooper from up on an overpass speaking to me from his megaphone (yep~a megaphone) to move down the highway a couple hundred yards because I was not allowed to hitchhike where I was standing. So I did. That encounter alone could have kept me in North Carolina longer than I had planned. So with my head down and a bit fearful I did what I was told and started walking along the highway. As I am walking along I look down at the side of the road and see a piece of litter and upon closer review, I realize it is my ID on the side of the road. If I wasn’t smiling for that ID photo, I swear to you it was looking up at me with a big smile as I saw it laying there.
I picked it up and I think the town of Ashville heard a sound they had never heard before. A drifter yelling at the top of his lungs “thank you God” and doing a dance on interstate 40 that maybe someone driving by that frosty morning, still remembers.
The day just got better. My next ride took me all the way from Ashville North Carolina to… you guessed it. “Home sweet Home”.
can you blame me for hitting the road ? |

Dog for sale !
Dog for Sale!
A guy is driving around Anadarko, OK and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog For Sale 'He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there. 'You talk?' he asks. 'Yep,' the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of ...hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story?' The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young.. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.' 'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running...
But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.' 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.'
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. 'Ten dollars,' the guy says. 'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?' 'Because he's a liar. He's never been out of the yard'

23 years ago tonight ~ 10.2.88
October 2, 2011
23 years ago tonight, Jill and I pulled into Olympia with 3 dogs, a new jeep Cherokee and our friend Bob the slob following behind us in a 24ft Ryder Truck with all our worldly goods. We had a few bucks and I think we still had some southern comfort in the glove compartment. That was it.
2 nights earlier we were living in Bermuda Dunes California in our duplex having a pretty wild going away party. A ”we’re moving to Washington party”. The kind of party when a complete stranger comes up to you with that drunken, to close, slobber in your face kind of drunk saying’ “ I hear you are leaving tomorrow morning to move to Olympia”. “I am from Tacoma and you are going to hate it in the northwest”, “It rains all the time. Don’t Do It~ Don't Do It ” (Is it odd that I still remember him saying that?)
So here we were in Olympia Washington on a Sunday evening after driving all night and day. We got kind of a late start Saturday morning after the party.
On our first night in Olympia, we checked in to the Super 8 on Martin Way and College St. (actually Lacey for you purists) and then went and had dinner at Bailey’s motor Inn. I have never been inside Bailey’s again since our first night here.
Monday morning we got busy trying to find shelter. Now is probably a good time to disclose, we had no jobs waiting, no friends or relatives and only one contact, our buddy Nancy. We had a dream and we were young and in love.
the home we moved to |
With shelter being high on our list, we viewed rental homes in McCLeary, Shelton and other woodsy remote outlying areas in the fringes of Thurston County and landed out in Carlyon Beach. By Thursday, we had our Ryder truck empty and we were living in our new 2 bedroom, 1 bath, and 2 woodstoves (our only heat) cabin.
We spent the rest of October looking for work which we finally found. The new job was to start a week before Thanksgiving 1988. That job is a story for another time, because it did actually happen and to write about it excites me to no end, we were so young, so naïve and so in love.
We built a life from scratch. It was very hard at times, very cold at times, very rainy at times, but when you are in the middle of a dream, the universe will continue to bless you and turn scarcity into abundance.
No Regrets ~ I love you Jill Renee
It’s a great life!
ps~ we originally wanted to move to Forks
Blessed ! Now Jill knits~ and I worry where my teens are on weekends |
